UBH International, the UK's only remaining, manufacturer of intermodal tank containers, has engineered its remarkable recovery on the basis of a two pronged strategy. On the one hand the Lancashire-based company has forged a highly successful partnership with CIMC, the world's largest manufacturer of dry box containers, which allows the production under licence of its standard tanks in China. Meanwhile, on the other flank, the company's UK manufacturing facility has made a decisive and determined move into the market for special tank containers. Amongst the highly specialised tank containers now being produced at UBHI are not only refrigerated tanks, electrically heated tanks, lined tanks and multi-compartment tanks, but also mini-tanks for offshore applications and cryogenic tanks for the carriage of air gases such as liquid nitrogen and argon. The trademark lightweight Universal Beam Tank design lends itself well to use in cryogenic applications, enabling payloads to be maximised, whilst providing excellent resistance to damage to the shell.
Impact testing at SNCF's test station at Tergnier in France was undertaken late last year to confirm the tank's resilience, the protoytpe coming through with flying colours. Proximity to the principal markets for specials, speed and flexibility of response to customer demands and trusted technical and engineering competence have enabled UBHI to perform strongly through the recent testing years which have confronted the tank container industry.
